An interest assessment can help you identify careers that meet your interests. Interest assessments usually ask you a series of questions about what you like and don’t like to do. Then they match your likes and dislikes to careers.

When you choose a career that matches your overall interests, you’re more likely to enjoy your job. You’re also more likely to be successful.

We Learned A Lot About Ourselves

You should only expect career tests and personality assessments to offer guidance and direction not the final answer regarding your career path. Ms. Marvin agrees, A career aptitude test is a great tool, but it should only be used as a guide.

As we completed the career aptitude tests and personality assessments to arrive at the best, we analyzed each platform on its ease of use, validity of results, and how it relayed your results. We also evaluated the length of time it took to complete each and whether the platform offered other career resources like access to career coaches.

How Does The Strong Interest Inventory Compare With Other Career Assessments

The Strong Interest Inventory is seen as a leader in career assessments from school counsellors to job employment agencies. Its often used in tandem with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator which is primarily used as a personality assessment.

When both are used together, a career coach or counsellor can gain a better, more holistic view of an individuals personality, behavior, and interests pertaining to their vocational interests.

Interestingly, sisters Katherine Cook and Isabel Briggs-Myers originally created the indicator as a best-fit assessment for jobswhich hit the corporate world by the mid-1950s. The sisters were self-taught students of psychology who used Jungs theory of psychological types to develop their own assessment. The first rudimental version of the MBTI® was published in 1962 with the Educational Testing Service in New Jersey.

The DISC assessment, an open-source resource sometimes used in the workplace, is primarily used to indicate communication styles and encourage better teamwork within organizations. Its split into four distinct communication categories: Dominant , Influencing , Steady , and Conscientious .

The Strong Interest Inventory, in contrast, aims to match people with their natural interests to encourage career satisfaction. This brings forth greater happiness and productivity overalla win-win for every step of an organizationfrom recruitment to retainment!

A Backgrounder On Strong Interestinventory

Strong Interest Inventory Part I

TheStrong-Campbell Interest Inventory, or SCII, is the fruit of the collaborationof two psychologists who may be considered as the frontrunners of vocationalinterest assessment. These two are Edward K. Strong, Jr. and David Campbell.

Strong came up with the idea ofcreating an interest assessment tool after noticing that the differences in thelikes and dislikes of people tend to be consistent over time. This led Strongto theorize that within particular professions are people with particular interests. These interests help the person perform better and enjoy their work. BecauseStrongs first attempt at creating a standardized vocational interests test isgeared only towards men, Campbell assisted in revising the instrument, makingit gender-fair.

Advice From An Expert

Dana Marvin, College Counselor,

1. What advice would you give a student who is unsure of their career path?

While it may seem like everyone else your age knows exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives, chances are theyre still questioning it too. You probably have a few ideas that are already interesting, and you should start there.

Also, know that it is equally as useful to know what you dont want to do as a career. Sometimes the easiest place to start is by crossing off the things you dont like before narrowing down something you might enjoy doing. Not a fan of blood? Maybe medical careers arent the best fit for you. Is your parent an accountant, and the explanation of the job sounds boring to you? Again, maybe not a good fit. Eventually, you start narrowing down your options.

Lastly, dont stress too much about it. Most students feel like they need to have their entire lives planned by 18, but the reality is many students change their mind throughout their college careers and beyond. Not having it all figured out is not only ok, but its completely normal. Spend time exploring different majors and classes, attending events, and asking questions about things that spark your interest.

2. What career aptitude test do you recommend?

3. Any other advice to students?
